Admiring My New Arcade Machine
WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
Some of the following stuff can be LEATHAL! Here's a great FAQ on monitors and monitor safety, view this FAQ.
First off, here's my beautiful NBA Jam 4-player 21" cabinet.

Its beautiful! And its MINE!

Ok, no one cares about that... but I'll let you look at the other pictures just for fun.
The Machine
MY GOD! ITS MINE! I HAVE IT AND ITS MINE!

Getting Under the Hood
SPU?
A picture of what we're calling the "Signal Processing Unit"
Here's a list of what I know is wrong with this thing from the French guy's rough explaination.

First, there's a problem with the Monitor's "Signal Processing Board" or "SPU". According to Frenchy, It doesn't work. We made up that name ("SPU") to sound like we know what we're talking about... It's a board that connects entirely to the Monitor mounting frame.

It also looks like the only input into it are power leads and a lead for video components (pictured below). The outputs consist of a white ring shaped adapter, mounted onto a daughter board, that plugs into the back of the CRT. There's also a place on the "SPU" for a wire that comes from the CRT to plug into.

I'm still doing some research on this stuff, but here are some links I found just in case someone else is having a problem with this.

Figuring Things Out
To start out with, I wanted to start getting things working. At least to the point that I saw the effect of plugging it in.

So I did what I thought any rational human being would do and plugged it in.

Nothing happened...

Well, ok, so something did happen... my NBA Jam machine got its new nickname M.F.er (See the intro for its full nickname... trying to use good language throughout the rest of this journal)

It took me a while to figure out the problem (ok, so I had to have good old Yappy tell me the next day). Apparently some evil mastermind, in an effort to discourage my unorthadox plans for this thing, put a friggin power switch on this thing all the way on the top!

After flipping that sucker on, I was overjoyed to find a bunch of stuff turn on! A light on the PCB, a light on something that looks like an Amp and the lights on the front panel turned on. I could even hear a little noise comming from the speakers, letting me know that most of the thing was being powered.

At this point, I still had the plugs from the controls unplugged, and the monitor was in complete shambles, so I left it as-is. It was good enough for me for one night.

Power switches!!! What will those crazy engineers think of next?!
